Glo Skillbridge programme, a skills training initiative of Glo Foundation for Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) street sweepers, will turn out its first set of graduates from the scheme this week, in Lagos.
The empowerment programme was flagged off last month in fulfilment of the Foundation’s pledge to equip staff of LAWMA with soft skills in fashion design, bead making, baking and digital skills.
In a statement issued in Lagos, the foundation disclosed that 150 LAWMA sweepers were selected to undergo the training at partner training centres across Lagos. It gave kudos to the trainees for achieving so much within the time frame of their programmes.
“Glo Foundation is happy to equip them with knowledge that will enable them to broaden their horizon and create other streams of income for themselves, the statement added”.
The Coordinator for the fashion design trainees at YetrosLane Academy, Atunrase Estate, Gbagada, Lagos, Mr. Ogunmade Johnpaul Tobi, confirmed that “the participants are amazing, they are all putting their best foot forward and they are willing to learn.” One of the participants, Damilola Ilemobayo, said she felt “blessed to be part of the training”, adding that “my skill as a fashion designer has improved, especially when it comes to beading fabrics and I can’t wait to show the world all that I have learnt. May God continue to bless Globacom”.
Similarly, Omotola Akinsanya, the coordinator for the baking training held at Bakery Initiatives, Yaba, Lagos explained that the participants responded enthusiastically to the programme. “Despite varying levels of literacy, they have shown a strong passion for the training and a deep eagerness to learn,” he stated. For Obadina Omowumi, one of the participants in the baking training, the experience has been transformative: “It’s been lovely. I really like the impact it has had on my life, both practically and theoretically,” she observed. She highlighted how the training covered essential topics such as material costing, measurements, and financial management. “I have been praying to God to keep expanding Globacom. I’m really glad about the training and so appreciative to Globacom for this opportunity.”
A coordinator of the Digital Skill training at ALX, Oluwatosin Abiodun-Lisk, noted that supervising the trainees “has been so wonderful for me and it is so humbling to see the students move from zero to 100, learning really fast”.
Endurance Francis, one of the participants from LAWMA noted that “it has been a life-changing experience for me and I know that the knowledge from here will take me to places. May God bless Glo for this opportunity”.
One of the most touching stories from the digital skills training came from Mrs Suliat Ojulari, who had never used a computer prior to the training. She can now easily navigate her way on a system and use several applications dexterously. ” I am very happy, at first I was discouraged because I had no idea about how to use a computer, but after watching a motivational video I made up my mind to learn and now I am very good at operating a laptop, all thanks to Glo and the coordinators, they made it easy for me”, she explained.
