A member of the House of Representatives, Jafar Aliyu Damisa, narrowly escaped death on Tuesday when suspected terrorists ambushed his convoy along the Lumma–Babanna road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
Naijaonpoint learnt that the attack occurred in the afternoon while the lawmaker, who represents Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency, was on his way to Babanna for an official assignment.
Eyewitnesses, who spoke with Daily Post on the incident, said the gunmen, identified as “Lakurawa terrorists”, suddenly opened fire on Damisa’s convoy, catching the security team unprepared.
“The attackers struck without warning and fired continuously, damaging several vehicles before the security team could respond,” a witness said.
Security escorts quickly returned fire in a fierce exchange that lasted several minutes.
During the confrontation, one soldier was killed, while several others sustained serious injuries. Some of Damisa’s political supporters were also reportedly hurt in the attack.
“It was a heavy exchange of gunfire. We counted at least 11 vehicles riddled with bullets,” another witness told reporters.
According to Daily Post, the injured were immediately taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Despite the ferocity of the assault, Damisa escaped unhurt, though several vehicles in his convoy were severely damaged.
