The world of The Legend of Zelda is finally coming alive through live-action, as the beloved video game franchise is getting its due on the big screen. In the current age of video game adaptations through film and TV, one of Nintendo’s most famous properties is now getting its chance.

The upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie has begun principal photography, as the cast and crew were spotted in New Zealand. Through set videos from @tonyolsenfilm and @josh.and.pine, the world finally has the first look at the new film, with the actors in their full costumes.

The set video from @tonyolsenfilm sees Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda, as she is seen in her attire walking around in the woods. One more cast member can be spotted, whom many audience members are speculating is Dichen Lachman as Impa, a Sheikah who is known in the games as Zelda’s bodyguard.

But it has yet to be confirmed by Sony if this really is the actress playing that character. In the scene that was being shot, Zelda and the yet-to-be-confirmed character are seen with several horses around them.

In the video captured by @josh.and.pine, Link takes the spotlight as Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, or potentially his stunt double, is seen in his green tunic, while wrapping himself in a coat, usually used to hide costumes or prevent them from getting dirty. Filming reportedly began in early November.

The Maze Runner filmmaker Wes Ball is tackling the big screen adaptation, based on a script from Derek Connolly and T. S. Nowlin. There have been many theories surrounding which The Legend of Zelda game the story will be based on, given how long the franchise has existed, but details are still being kept under wraps.

The Legend of Zelda movie is just one of several big video game franchises getting the movie treatment, as a Call of Duty film is currently in the works too at Paramount, with Peter Berg directing, while Taylor Sheridan is writing and executive producing. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which recently debuted its first trailer and is slated for April 3, 2026, is also happening, extending Nintendo’s theatrical participation.

A sequel to A Minecraft Movie was also greenlit this year, set for July 23, 2027, following the success of the first installment, which grossed over $957 million at the worldwide box office. The Legend of Zelda is set to open in theaters on May 7, 2027.
