The University of Benin has received its first solar-powered borehole, courtesy of LG Electronics, to transform water supply on campus.
According to a statement, the recently commissioned project aimed to provide clean and uninterrupted water to students and staff, reducing dependence on the national grid and cutting utility costs.
Corporate Marketing Manager, LG Electronics Nigeria, Paul Mba, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development.
“At LG Electronics, we believe in using technology to improve lives. This solar-powered borehole is not just about providing water; it’s about creating a sustainable future where renewable energy plays a key role in meeting basic needs. We are proud to support UNIBEN in this initiative,” he said.
He also expressed hope that the facility would be well-maintained for future students.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, who was represented by the Chairman of the Security Committee, UNIBEN, Prof. Fred Ekhaise, described the project as a “game-changer” for the university community.
“Access to clean water is essential for both academic and residential life, and having a solar-powered solution ensures reliability while promoting environmental responsibility. We deeply appreciate LG Electronics for this generous contribution,” he said.
He urged the company to extend similar support to other hostels to address ongoing water challenges.
Moreover, students welcomed the project, noting its impact on daily life.
President of the UNIBEN Student Union Government, Agboola Timilehin, highlighted the persistent water shortages on campus, noting, “We often struggle with water supply, especially during peak hours. This borehole will make a huge difference, and the fact that it runs on solar energy means we won’t have to worry about power outages affecting water availability.”
Further, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Clement Ighodaro, praised LG Electronics for the initiative, urging students to appreciate and maintain the facility.
