Lionel Messi and Wout Weghorst’s full World Cup post-match spat unveiled as video emerges

Full footage of Lionel Messi’s spat with Wout Weghorst at the 2022 World Cup has emerged.

Argentina’s narrow victory over the Netherlands at Qatar 2022 will go down as one of the most iconic World Cup games of all time, as eventual winners La Albiceleste were taken to extra time and penalties at the death.

The tie saw plenty of friction between the squads, with tensions flaring between the two sides for the whole game.

But it wasn’t just the on-pitch drama that fans will remember, as the quarter-final also dished out a tasty and unexpected post-match interview from footballing icon Messi.

Usually composed and reserved, the Paris Saint-Germain star shocked the world as he shouted at the man who had scored the Netherlands’ two late goals – now-Man United striker Weghorst.

Those who weren’t there to witness the cause of the spat in person only saw Messi’s reaction caught on camera during his interview as he yelled ‘what are you looking at, idiot? Go over there’ at Weghorst.

But now, a full video of Messi, Weghorst and the aftermath of the Dutchman’s discussion with Messi’s Argentina teammates has emerged.

The footage begins with the Burnley loanee waiting behind the cameras, peering round a wall and watching Messi speak to the media, until he catches the Argentine’s eye.

After Messi’s outburst, the video then skips to after the interview and him walking down towards the dressing room with teammates, only for Weghorst to approach him with an outstretched hand.

But the Barcelona legend showed no interest, leaving a frustrated Weghorst to have a discussion with members of Argentina’s squad.

“I was waiting for him and wanted to give him a hand,” Weghorst is heard saying.

“And he’s doing that? That’s disrespectful.”

Lisandro Martinez -who Weghorst went on to join at Man United after the World Cup – then pushes the Dutchman away to disburse the heated discussion.

In January, Messi was asked about the incident and admitted he regretted the situation, saying: “I don’t like this picture.

“I don’t like what I did. There was a lot of tension and it came out naturally. A lot had happened with this player and two others during the match. It came out naturally. I don’t like this image.”
