LP Calls For Free, Fair Election In Enugu Council Poll

Barr Casmir Agbo

The Labour Party has called for a free and fair poll ahead of the September 21 local government election in Enugu State.

Its Chairman, Barr Casmir Agbo, stated this in Enugu while commenting on the level of preparedness of his party.

He claimed that the LP had put the Peoples Democratic Party on its toes, hence the grass-roots campaign PDP is embarking on.

He said, “This is the first time PDP has been doing campaigns for local government elections in the history of Enugu State for the past twenty-four years.

“They are doing it because of pressure from the Labour Party. If I give you the names of our chairmanship candidates, they are men of integrity in their various LGAs.

“PDP is afraid. LP has a lot of chances because PDP has become a big problem to our people.”

On his conviction that the election being conducted by an electoral body set up by the state government controlled by the PDP would be free and fair, Barr Agbo said, “We had a meeting under the auspices of the Inter-party Advisory Council, Enugu State.

“I told the chairman of Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission, ENSIEC, that he must write his name in gold unless he wants to do like others.

“If he writes the results and announces it without the real outcome of the elections as other previous chairmen did, that will be the end of his career.

“He would go back to his classroom. It must be free and fair. We are not sure of ENSIEC, but we have told them to play the games by the rules.”

He said LP had been a forceful opposition in the state, noting that,

“We complained when some demolition was carried out. I condemned it because of the way it was carried out.

“LP can’t carry knives to fight the government. If you talk about opposition in Enugu State, PDP will tell you that LP is their albatross.”
