Luigi Mangione admitted in court to shooting and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City in 2024, as the 28-year-old pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges. Mangione, 28, is pleading guilty to one count of stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death and one count of interstate stalking resulting in death.
Mangione told Judge Margaret M. Garnett: “I shot Mr Thompson in Manhattan.” He added: “I understood that my actions would place him in fear of death or bodily injury. I knew what I was doing was illegal.” The prosecution has asked that Mangione receive the maximum sentence for the charges, which is life in prison.
Before admitting his guilt, Garnett asked Mangione, “Do you feel that your mind is clear today?”
To this, he answered, “I do.” When Garnett asked if he would plead guilty, Mangione said, “Yes.”
Brian Thompson’s family is in the courtroom, and members began to cry in court as Mangione admitted to the killing.
The 28-year-old is due to stand trial at the state level over Thompson’s death, and has already pleaded not guilty to every charge.
