Kroger reported the closures, which span 15 US states, in its first-quarter 2025 earnings release.
The move is understood to deliver a “modest financial benefit” which Kroger planned to reinvest into the customer experience.
Kroger said workers at the stores affected by the closure will be offered jobs at other locations.
“We’re simplifying our business and reviewing areas that will not be meaningful to our future growth,” said Kroger Chairman and interim CEO Ron Sargent.
“Unfortunately, today, not all of our stores are delivering the sustainable results we need.”
Kroger has not released an official list of which stores or banners are affected.
Grocery Dive, which covers news within the sector, had by August 26, 2025 tracked 39 stores slated for closure across nine of Kroger’s banners.
A Massachusetts-focussed news outlet this month confirmed that all 39 of those identified locations are now closed.
According to MassLive, the closures span Kroger, Fred Meyer, Fry’s Food and Drug, Harris Teeter, Jay C Food Stores, King Soopers, Mariano’s, Pick ‘n Save and QFC banners.
Twenty-one more stores are still to close ahead of Kroger’s year-end deadline.
The locations not been publicly identified.
