A political rift has opened up within the Malami family in Kebbi State, as Almustapha Malami, the younger brother of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has abandoned his brother’s political path to align with the incumbent APC Governor, Nasir Idris.
The declaration, made Monday in Birnin Kebbi, is seen by political analysts as a surprising turn, considering the “long-standing political rivalry” between the ex-AGF (who is now with the ADC) and the Governor.
Almustapha Malami explicitly backed Governor Idris’ bid for a second term, citing development as his primary motivation.
“Whether we like it or not, Governor Nasir Idris has transformed Birnin Kebbi and taken the state capital to a level it truly deserves,” the younger Malami said. “If he is re-elected in 2027, Kebbi State will witness even greater development and urban growth.”
He stressed that his decision was voluntary and made without external influence, despite the political pressures surrounding the famous rivalry.
“I joined this crusade with a clear conscience and a united mind. Nothing can stop me from supporting a government that is delivering on its promises to the people,” he added.
The Kebbi State APC Chairman, Alhaji Muhammed Kana Zuru, described the younger Malami’s move as a sign of his ability to distinguish “reality from mere political speculation.”
Kana welcomed the development, assuring the defector of protection and integration into the party’s structures ahead of the crucial 2027 elections.
“The APC is open to all well-meaning individuals who share the vision of the Kaura-led administration. Almustapha Malami will be fully co-opted into party programmes and adequately protected,” he said.
