A man identified simply as Seyi has been killed by suspected cultists who allegedly mistook him for a member of a rival group at Ijako Market, Owode-Ijako, Ogun State.

It was gathered on Sunday that the incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, September 23, when the suspected cultists arrived at the market in search of another man identified as Dammy.

A police source, who spoke anonymously because he was not authorised to discuss the matter, said Seyi was shot by the attackers at a location behind the market.

The source said the assailants had gone to the area looking for their target before opening fire on the victim, adding that the incident was allegedly connected to the drug trade.

“Police have commenced investigation into the incident and are making efforts to identify and arrest those responsible,” the source said.

Meanwhile, an anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, alleged that the attackers had specifically gone after Dammy before killing Seyi in what appeared to be a case of mistaken identity.

The platform further claimed that Seyi was attacked with an axe after being shot, adding that people initially thought the deceased was Dammy until they saw his body and identified him as Seyi.

When contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said he was unaware of the incident.

He promised to make enquiries and revert, but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.
