Benard Kyalo recounted the ordeal during an interview on Monday, February 16, 2026. He explained that he had stepped out to relieve himself when the snake struck unexpectedly. “Before I finished, the snake bit me in my private parts,” he said. Despite the intense pain, Kyalo managed to push the cobra back into a nearby hole.
The bite caused severe swelling and excruciating pain, prompting his family to rush him to a local health facility. Dr. Peter Musyoka confirmed that the injury was serious due to the venom’s potency and the sensitivity of the area. Kyalo received antivenom and supportive treatment.
Health officials warn that delays in treating snakebites can be life-threatening. Kitui County has seen rising cases, with at least 1,939 reported between 2020 and 2024, though the true number may be higher.
