Manchester United have held initial discussions over a potential move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen — but reports suggest the Nigerian is not at the top of their wish list this summer, Footynaija.com understands.

United remain intent on reinforcing their frontline ahead of next season, as new manager Ruben Amorim targets a more clinical edge in attack. Despite heavy investment in recent years, questions remain over the club’s firepower.

Rasmus Højlund arrived from Atalanta in 2023 in a high-profile deal but has endured a mixed campaign, struggling for consistency in front of goal.

Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee also joined from Bologna, yet has appeared more effective in a deeper role, prompting United to reassess their striking options.

According to French journalist Santi Aouna, Manchester United held a meeting with representatives of Osimhen on Monday, exploring the possibility of a summer move.

The Napoli striker, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has been prolific, scoring 33 goals in 37 games in Turkey. That form builds on his impressive record of 76 goals in 133 matches for Napoli.

Osimhen is reportedly seeking a deal worth around €12m per year — approximately £200,000 a week — a wage that would make him one of the highest earners at the club. While his reported £40m transfer fee may be within reach, his salary demands and the club’s Champions League status could become stumbling blocks.

However, Aouna adds that Osimhen may not be United’s first-choice striker. Instead, the Red Devils are believed to be prioritising a move for Viktor Gyökeres, who thrived under Amorim at Sporting CP. The Swedish forward has emerged as a key target due to his familiarity with Amorim’s tactical setup and his physical, high-pressing style.
