The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday commissioned its new national secretariat in Wuse 2, Abuja, signalling intensified preparations by the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The unveiling was led by former Senate President and ADC National Chairman, David Mark, who arrived in company with former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola; ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai; former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal; and Senator Dino Melaye.
Addressing party members, Mark urged the ADC and the wider coalition to remain focused as the country moves toward another election cycle.
He said, “Let it be known to all that this coalition of national political opposition groups goes beyond gaining political power. It is a concerted effort to rebuild the crumbling pillars of Nigeria’s democracy.
“The mission is clear: Rescue Nigeria. Rebuild Nigeria. Return power to the people.”
The opposition alliance formally adopted the ADC as its platform on July 2, 2025, positioning the party as the vehicle to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
Mark accused the APC-led Federal Government of undermining democratic institutions and eroding political pluralism.
He alleged that the current administration had, over the last two years, pushed the country into a “creeping descent into total civilian dictatorship.”
He added that the government had become “consumed with politicking” while abandoning governance responsibilities.
Mark said, “The blatant destabilisation and infiltration of all major opposition political parties is aimed at achieving only one objective: to enhance total state capture and leave Nigerians with no alternative or options in 2027.
“This coalition is to prevent our country’s descent into a one-party state.”
The coalition backing the ADC includes major political figures such as 2023 presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar (PDP) and Peter Obi (Labour Party).
Other prominent members include former Youth Minister Solomon Dalong; publisher Dele Momodu; Senator Gabriel Suswam; Senator Ireti Kingibe (LP); former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha; and former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd).
At the event, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu formally handed over the reins of leadership and presented party membership cards to Mark and Aregbesola as interim national chairman and national secretary, respectively.
