Awards season is once more upon us, and there are some serious contenders in the ring this year, leading up to the Academy Awards. Two of the biggest movies are Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another and Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme. However, the latter, starring Timothée Chalamet, has now crept past the former in box office sales.
To date, One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has grossed $71.6 million. Its international release has brought that total up to over $200 million, making it PTA’s highest-grossing movie, despite it not actually being profitable because of its massive budget. However, in its third week in theaters, Marty Supreme has earned a domestic box office haul of $72.26 million.
The Oscars are about much more than just box office sales. Originality, craft skills, and politics all come into play when picking a winner. However, the financial success of a film is indicative of its popularity with audiences both domestically and internationally, and can still boost its chances of winning major awards.
The theatrical run of One Battle After Another is essentially over, with it now available to watch at home, while Marty Supreme has just begun. So far, there has only been a limited international release for Marty Supreme. However, the initial overseas success has been strong, with international box office sales passing $10 million. As it moves to other, larger markets, the box office sales look to beat those of One Battle After Another.
The table tennis film is predicted to break more records for A24. The company’s current top performer is Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All At Once, which saw huge box office success, grossing $77.2 million domestically. This new release by Josh Safdie is expected to overtake that comfortably before the end of its theatrical run.
Unconventional marketing for the film played no small part in the success of Marty Supreme. Over the past few years, Safdie and A24 have made names for themselves on the world stage. But Chalamet also took on a big role in promoting the movie. A source close to the campaign noted his involvement to The Hollywood Reporter, saying:
With Marty Supreme, he’s been really leaning into the things that he loves himself. He’s treating the campaign like being an athlete. There’s an aspect of this where it’s incredibly unrelenting: the choreographed video of the Zoom call, pop-culture music stunts, all these viral moments with the blimps. And then his pop-up trucks, which we did around the world. And he collaborated on a tracksuit that he gave to the best of the best. It’s been amazing.
The viral marketing campaigns paid off, and people have been talking about the new Chalamet release long before it hit the screens. Now, Marty Supreme is looking to fly past One Battle After Another’s earnings and quite possibly become the highest-grossing movie for A24 to date.
