Marty Supreme Trailer: Timothée Chalamet Is A Much Darker Sports Star In A24 Drama With Oscar Buzz

Timothée Chalamet is hurtling towards victory or disaster in the new trailer for Marty Supreme, A24’s upcoming sports drama. Loosely inspired by the career of real-life table tennis player Marty Reisman, Chalamet’s movie follows his new protagonist, Marty Mauser, a young man who believes he can become an international superstar through his sport.

In contrast to Marty Supreme‘s initial teaser, which demonstrates more of the tone of an uplifting underdog story, this trailer hints at the darker side of Chalamet’s lead character. The soundtrack shifts from “Forever Young” to “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” and scenes that we saw before are repositioned from another character’s perspective, painting Marty as more naïve.

Directed by Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, and Tyler, the Creator, and releases theatrically on Christmas Day, alongside The Testament of Ann Lee and No Other Choice. Marty’s pursuit of greatness is shown to be very trying for his family, while things spiral out of control elsewhere. On the other hand, the chaotic Safdie movie seems to be exactly the vehicle Chalamet was hoping for to help him reach the pinnacle of a Hollywood career, as he is regarded as the frontrunner in the 2026 Oscar Best Lead Actor race.

Marty Supreme is also a likely Best Picture nominee and will probably secure some other major nominations. It is also tempting to compare it to this year’s The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne Johnson, another sports drama and more traditional biopic directed by Benny Safdie. However, after The Smashing Machine‘s box office flop, what Marty Supreme has going for it is an electric atmosphere and unconventional approach.

Chalamet’s last feature film was A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic that was nominated for Best Picture. Chalamet was nominated for Best Lead Actor, appearing to be the runner-up to Adrien Brody for The Brutalist. The Call Me By Your Name star is now working on the next Dune movie, reprising his role as Paul Atreides alongside a star-studded cast.

Although with a much longer career from before it, Josh Safdie is probably best known now for co-directing Uncut Gems with his brother, the crime drama and thriller that was a bit too crazed to break into major awards conversations. Marty Supreme could be the culmination of multiple careers, but it needs to conquer the box office first — we will have to wait and see what happens on December 25.
