The Marvel Universe is still not safe from the terrifying King in Black, with the once defeated God of Symbiotes finally set to make his return in his very own comic series. But what will it mean for the world of Venom when the rise of Knull begins in 2026?
Marvel has announced the five-issue limited series will be co-written by ongoing Venom writer Al Ewing and Tom Waltz (Wolverine: Blood Hunt), with art by Juanan Ramirez (Eddie Brock: Carnage). Along with the creative team, first cover art, and plot synopsis, Marvel teases that this story will prove to be “a pivotal chapter in the lead up to a symbiote epic coming in 2026.”
RETURN OF THE KING! Weakened from his last death, trapped by the enemy he never expected, the God of the Void waits in a cage once again. His captors think Knull has nothing to fight back with — but in Knull’s hands, nothing is a weapon. And there’s a greater weapon out there, waiting for the King in Black to take it… and take his revenge.

Venom #250 Marks The Return of Knull, Looking To Enslave The Venom Symbiote
After being established as the previously unknown God of Symbiotes during Donny Cates and Stegman’s acclaimed Venom tenure, 2020 saw his power unleashed upon the heroes of the Marvel Universe. Good prevailed, with Eddie Brock claiming his throne. But it takes more than that to keep Knull down, as his first-ever Knull series looks to prove.
With Marvel already confirming Knull’s return in Venom #250 next month, writer Tom Waltz teases the story set to spin out into Knull #1 this January:
“When super-editor Jordan White reached out to me to see if I’d be interested in collaborating with fellow writer Al Ewing on the new Knull series, I couldn’t jump at the chance fast enough. Besides working alongside Al, who is an absolutely fantastic and steady talent, the kicker for me was getting to play with such an amazing character with such untapped potential as Knull. The King in Black has once again risen up out of the void to cause delicious havoc and mayhem across the universe, and we’ve got surprises a’plenty in store, my friends. And just wait until everyone sees Juanan Ramirez’s darkly bombastic artwork — WOW!”
Will The King in Black’s Return To Marvel Be Permanent?
What Role Will Knull Be Playing in Marvel’s Next Symbiote Epic?
In the half-decade since Knull was defeated, all sides of the Venom world have undergone dramatic changes. Not only has Eddie Brock moved on to become the new host of Carnage, but the version of Venom who will face Knull’s wrath isn’t even the same one he faced. And there’s no telling how Mary Jane Watson’s Venom will fare against a vengeful Knull.
While this new confirmation of a massive symbiote event planned for 2026 isn’t a shock (and as much could be expected with Knull’s return), some questions may finally be answered. Chief among them: who is the unknown King in Black teased by Marvel to already be in play? Could this be the power Knull is secretly seeking in his own limited series?
