Marvel’s New Fantastic Four Makeover Updates a Core Detail Fans Forgot About

A core concept of the Fantastic Four that’s been completely forgotten about is making a comeback. 2025 is the year of Marvel’s First Family, with the FF’s official introduction to the MCU and Marvel relaunching its Fantastic Four series. Next up is the revival of an organization that is very important to the Fantastic Four.

This week’s Fantastic Four #6 by Ryan North, Humberto Ramos, Victor Olazaba, Edgar Delgado, and VC’s Joe Caramagna is Part One of “The Invincible Woman.” Maria Hill comes to the Fantastic Four with a proposal: to help her restart S.H.I.E.L.D. by turning it into a new version of the FF’s Future Foundation.

Fantastic Four And SHIELD Are Working Together To Bring Back The Future Foundation

Marvel’s big storyline heading into 2026 is the return of S.H.I.E.L.D. Previously solicited issues of Captain America were changed to switch out new characters, the United Captains, for a new S.H.I.E.L.D. led by Nick Fury Jr. Next, readers learn the Fantastic Four play a role as well.

This role involves merging the Future Foundation and S.H.I.E.L.D. together, and it remains to be seen whether the FF agrees to Maria Hill’s terms. The Future Foundation was referenced in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but just in passing. The group has a much larger presence in the comics.

Created by Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting, the Future Foundation was an initiative started by Reed Richards to help build a better tomorrow. Reed gathered the best young minds from throughout the Marvel Universe to make that happen through a combination of science, research, and exploration.

Members of the Future Foundation got to sport white and black uniformed costumes, with Spider-Man even joining the group following Human Torch’s death. The Future Foundation has grown in prominence thanks to the hit video game Marvel Rivals.

What The Future Foundation’s Return Means For The Marvel Universe

Marvel has planned for S.H.I.E.L.D.’s return to coincide with the organization’s 60th anniversary. S.H.I.E.L.D.’s comeback will be resolved in Armageddon, a 2026 event penned by Captain America scribe Chip Zdarsky. What we didn’t know at the time of the announcement was how the FF factored into things.

The Fantastic Four will more than likely agree to join forces with Nick Fury Jr. and Maria Hill, leading to an all-new era for not only the Future Foundation, but also S.H.I.E.L.D. They could run into conflict with heroes such as Captain America, with pro and anti-S.H.I.E.L.D. camps forming.
