The Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), has stated that the newly constructed canine facility, donated to the Agency by the German Government, will significantly enhance Nigeria’s fight against illicit drugs.
Marwa, who commissioned the modern canine complex in Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday, described the project as a milestone in international cooperation.
“May I assure all stakeholders that the provision of this facility will significantly drive our fight against illicit drugs, fulfil our core mandate and secure the future of our nation. The quality of the infrastructure at the new NDLEA Dog facility is indeed commendable. It speaks volumes of the commitment, goodwill, and tenacity of our partners,” he said.
He noted that the Canine Unit has been pivotal to primary operations, citing the seizure of 74.119kg of captagon at the Apapa seaport in 2021 as a striking example.
According to Marwa, NDLEA sniffer dogs have been instrumental to the seizure of over 17.932 metric tonnes of narcotics since their deployment.
“In years past, the poor infrastructure of the NDLEA Canine Unit limited its capacity to effectively address developmental and operational challenges. This new facility will provide a dignified environment that motivates our Canine Unit personnel to discharge their duties effectively,” he stated.
He added that the intervention by Germany through the Liaison Office of the German Federal Criminal Police, which sponsored the construction of the facility between August 2024 and September 2025, has changed the outlook of the Unit.
German Government Pledges Continued Support
German Consul General, Daniel Krull, praised the NDLEA’s work, stressing that its success benefits not only Nigeria but also Germany.
“Your agency has been very, very successful, instrumental in fighting crime in Nigeria. That is important for Nigeria, for the region, and it goes far beyond, it is also important for us in Germany. So congratulations for the amazing work,” he said.
Krull added that trust was the most important currency in international cooperation and commended the NDLEA for its partnership.
Similarly, Deputy Head of Section IZ14 BKA, Berlin, Mr. Florian Bulow, likened the long-standing collaboration with NDLEA to a “marriage built on trust.”
“If you work together as a team and go this long road as a team, you can achieve something. And what we have achieved together is that,” Bulow said.
Marwa expressed gratitude to the German government, particularly the personnel of the Liaison Office of the German Federal Criminal Police and their colleagues in Berlin, Saxony, and Sachsen-Anhalt, for their role in delivering the project.
He emphasised that the commissioning “marks a significant milestone in the history of NDLEA’s collaboration with Germany” and vowed that the Agency would sustain its operational excellence in the fight against drug trafficking.
