The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, has called on African nations to deepen regional cooperation and embrace innovation towards building a safer and stronger continent.
Matawalle made the call in Abuja on Wednesday night at a dinner for participants of the inaugural African Chiefs of Service Staff Summit which brought together service chiefs, security leaders, diplomats, and industry stakeholders from across Africa.
“Tonight, we are not gathered for war, but for celebration.
“We are here to honor the sacrifices made for peace and to reaffirm our commitment to building a safer and stronger Africa,” he said.
The minister commended the continent’s chiefs of defence staff for their sacrifice and leadership, stressing that their collaboration remained vital in safeguarding sovereignty and protecting citizens.
He noted that the summit had provided a platform for frank discussions on key security priorities, including border management, counter-terrorism, maritime safety, and the deployment of new technologies such as artificial intelligence to enhance defence operations.
These, according to him, are not mere ideas, but practical solutions to the complex challenges confronting Africa today.
He gave assurance that Nigeria would continue to invest in training, support strong institutions, and promote the values of democracy, fairness, and respect for human rights.
In his remarks, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, described the summit as a landmark step toward building a stronger continental security framework.
Musa urged participating countries to sustain the momentum generated in Abuja and translate resolutions into concrete action.
“Unity is our strongest weapon. If we stand together as Africans, no threat, whether terrorism, piracy, or cybercrime, can overpower us. This summit has proven that our bonds are stronger than our borders,” he said.
“As we raise a glass tonight, let us celebrate not only the success of this summit, but also the hope of a peaceful Africa where every citizen can live in safety and dignity,” he added.
The dinner featured cultural performances and entertainment, showcasing Nigeria’s hospitality as the three-day summit came to a close. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
