Manchester United are in advanced negotiations with Michael Carrick over a two-year contract to make him the club’s permanent head coach.
Naijaonpoint reports that senior figures at Old Trafford have decided the former midfielder is the preferred choice to take the role full-time after his spell in interim charge.
Carrick confirmed on Friday that clarity on his future is imminent. “The future for me is going to be decided pretty soon. We knew that,” he said as quoted by the BBC.
An official announcement could arrive before Sunday’s final home match of the season against Nottingham Forest. The proposed deal is expected to include an option for a further year.
The ongoing talks follow recommendations from chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox to minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Carrick has won 10 of his 15 league matches since taking charge in January, guiding United into the Champions League places. The club need one point from their final two fixtures to secure third place.
Support within the dressing room has been strong, and the majority of supporters believe the former England international has earned the opportunity to lead the team long term. Carrick has also been shortlisted for the Premier League Manager of the Season award.
He confirmed that Casemiro will be available for his Old Trafford farewell this weekend. Carrick also plans to continue a tradition started by Sir Alex Ferguson by addressing supporters after the Forest game.
“That’s important anyway,” the coach said. “The supporters are a massive part of this club.
“We thank them for the season; the last four months for me personally.
“Regardless of that, for what we’ve gone through and that connection, which the players have felt, it’s important for me to thank the fans for that.”
