The Miss Universe festivities took a shocking turn this week when an explosive confrontation between a Thai pageant official and Miss Mexico set off a wave of walkouts.

During what was supposed to be a routine pre-pageant ceremony in Bangkok, tensions boiled over when Nawat Itsaragrisil, a senior Thai pageant director, publicly scolded Mexico’s Fatima Bosch for allegedly failing to post promotional material.

Witnesses say his reprimand quickly escalated, with Bosch attempting to explain herself before Nawat called security and threatened to expel her and anyone who dared support her.

Moments later, Bosch walked out, and several contestants followed in solidarity. The emotional scene, streamed live online, showed women in gowns and sashes standing up from their seats as Nawat warned, “If you want to continue, sit down.”

Most of the contestants left the room.

In interviews following the incident, Bosch described the confrontation as “disrespectful,” claiming Nawat had called her “dumb” …an insult he later denied, insisting his words were “misunderstood.”

The 25-year-old said, “I’m not afraid to make my voice heard. I came here to be a voice for women who fight for their causes.”

Her remarks resonated with fans and fellow contestants alike. Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, the reigning Miss Universe, was among those who left the event. “This is about women’s rights,” she declared. “To trash another girl is beyond disrespectful… That’s why I’m walking out.”

The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) wasted no time condemning the outburst. In a firm statement, MUO President Raul Rocha said Nawat had “forgotten what it means to be a true host” and accused him of humiliating and intimidating a contestant. Rocha confirmed that the organization was taking over operations in Thailand and considering legal action.

“Miss Universe is an empowerment platform,” Rocha went on. “Our mission is to elevate women’s voices, not silence them.”
