A Moroccan woman, Khadija Diab, has been in Morocco since April 2026 and is not in the custody of Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, her lawyer, Bilkisu Abdulrasheed Chedi, has said.

Chedi, the Executive Director of Women Aware of Rights Initiative, said Diab returned to Morocco after the organisation allegedly helped her secure an emergency travel document when her husband, Nasiru Idris Musa, allegedly withheld her international passport.

The lawyer made the clarification in a video shared on Gumi’s verified Facebook page on Tuesday amid claims by Diab’s husband concerning her whereabouts.

According to Chedi, Diab has spent about six months in Morocco and is currently staying with her family. She said the woman’s relatives confirmed her safe arrival after she left Nigeria.

She dismissed claims that Diab was with Gumi, describing the allegation as unfounded.

Chedi said Diab had contacted the organisation in October 2025, alleging that she was subjected to domestic abuse, poor maintenance and what she described as an “unlawful and unnatural conjugal relationship” during her marriage.

She added that the organisation advised her to undergo medical examinations following her complaints, saying the tests reportedly showed that she had contracted sexually transmitted infections.

The lawyer said Diab subsequently expressed her decision to end the marriage, citing alleged emotional and physical abuse.

Chedi disclosed that legal action was initiated on Diab’s behalf at the Area Sharia Court on Daura Road, Kaduna, with the case first mentioned on October 3, 2025.

She said proceedings were later stalled by several developments, including a reconciliation application filed by the husband’s lawyer, a change of legal representation and a subsequent challenge to the court’s jurisdiction.

According to her, the absence of lawyers from some proceedings and the judicial strike in Kaduna further delayed the matter. She said the prolonged process eventually affected Diab emotionally and strengthened her desire to return to Morocco.

Chedi said that because Diab’s passport was allegedly with her husband, the organisation obtained an emergency travel document for her through the Moroccan authorities.

She added that Moroccan immigration officials confirmed that Diab arrived in the country safely, while the Moroccan Embassy in Nigeria also communicated her arrival to the organisation.

Before leaving Nigeria, the lawyer said, Diab authorised her to continue pursuing the legal process on her behalf. Chedi disclosed that the initial case at the Daura Road Sharia Court was discontinued on June 10, 2026.

She said another suit was subsequently filed in July seeking the dissolution of Diab’s marriage in accordance with Islamic law.

Chedi urged members of the public to disregard the allegation that Diab was being held by Gumi, saying her intervention was aimed at providing clarification and putting an end to the controversy over the Moroccan woman’s whereabouts.
