Afrobeat singer Davido has weighed in on the ongoing music label drama.
Kemi Filani reported that Shallopopi had called out Dapper Music over alleged unpaid money. He claimed that more than $1 million of his money was allegedly in Dapper’s possession.
In his series of rants, he accused the music executive of manipulating artists, claiming he had previously warned him about how the situation could end. He described him as the real Yahoo boy.
In what seems like a reaction to the saga, Davido, in a now-deleted social media post, said he also wants to talk, but his manager, Asa Asika, and one Banks are preventing him from speaking out.
“Since everybody dey vex for their label. Me I wan talk o, na Asa and Bank dey hold my mouth since. No worry, no be now. The time will come. E go pass Peter own”.
Davido’s statement is coming as a surprise as the singer has been called out by several people over unpaid debts.
In 2024, Upcoming music producer Napji called out Davido, claiming he was the producer for Davido’s hit songs, Fem, Jowo, and Sunlight, on his album, A Better Time. He revealed that he was paid an advance of N500,000 per song, but he wasn’t paid his royalties, or publishing royalties. He threatened to release more information and urged the public to tag Davido.
Davido had reacted to it, writing, “Your papa”.
The Former NFF president, Amaju Pinnick had publicly called out the singer for reneging his contract. He filed a lawsuit against the singer, seeking N2.3 billion in damages and an injunction to prevent Davido from performing at any show or event in Nigeria until he refunded the payment he received.
The singer had agreed to settle the dispute out of court and had agreed to pay N30 million to Amaju.
A Nigerian photographer and businessman, Abu Salami had also called him out for reneging on a contract worth millions. He claimed that Davido had refused to refund him and had bullied him by sending thugs to him.
To add to the list, Nigerian Tribal model, Adetutu Alabi had accused the singer of owing her after featuring in his music video. She narrated her encounter with him and what transpired between them, as she pleaded with the singer to pay her money.
Big Brother Naija winner and singer Laycon had also called out DJ Neptune over unpaid royalties. In a post on X, he requested his royalty from their hit song, ‘Nobody’ remix as he questioned if his royalties weren’t still ready as he noted how it had been 4 years.
In December of 2023, Harrysong called out Kcee over unpaid royalties and unreleased songs. He further called Kcee a bully while he pleaded with him to be fair to him and give him what rightfully belongs to him.
Not done, in an Instagram live, he expressed that for the whole 7 years he worked for Kcee, he was broke. He went on to narrate how, at some point, he did not even have a bed or foam to put in his apartment.
