Simon Ekpa, the self-styled Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, has expressed confidence that his conviction and six-year prison sentence in Finland will be overturned on appeal.
Ekpa made the claim while addressing supporters during proceedings connected to his appeal against the Finnish court judgment.
He maintained that the case had resulted in the imprisonment of the wrong person and insisted that the facts surrounding his conviction would eventually become clear.
Ekpa’s position is that the appeal process will expose what he considers to be errors in the case against him.
He told Biafra agitators that he remained optimistic about the outcome, stressing that he expected the truth to emerge from the legal proceedings.
In substance, his message was that the Finnish authorities would eventually realise that the person currently serving the sentence was not responsible for the crimes for which he was convicted.
A Finnish district court had sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison on September 1, 2025, after finding him guilty of terrorism-related offences.
The case attracted significant attention in Nigeria because of allegations linking Ekpa’s activities to violence and killings in the South-East.
Finnish prosecutors had accused him of using social media platforms to promote separatist activities and influence violent actions in Nigeria.
Ekpa, however, has continued to reject the basis of his conviction and is seeking to have the judgment overturned through the appeal process.
His latest comments indicate that he remains confident that the appellate proceedings will produce a different outcome.
The appeal will now determine whether the original conviction and sentence will stand or be reviewed by the Finnish judicial authorities.
