Nature of Things: Sarika Collis-Suzuki and Anthony Morgan for hosting

CBC has revealed that Sarika Collis-Suzuki and Anthony Morgan will take over as the new co-hosts of “The Nature of Things.” The duo will begin their full-time roles in season 63 after David Suzuki previously announced his retirement in the spring of 2023.

Both presenters had previously guest hosted the longest-running science series on television in the past. They will return to host every episode in Suzuki’s final season, which premieres on Canadian Public Radio January 6, 2023.

Morgan is a molecular scientist, entrepreneur, game designer, and doctoral researcher based in Toronto. Over the past two decades, he has worked in several areas of science communication, including stints with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the Ontario Science Centre. He is also a former segment anchor for the now-defunct Bell Media TV series “Daily Planet”, has served as host and consultant on Vice TV programming and was the summer host of CBC’s award-winning science radio show “Quirks & Quarks” in 2018.

Collis Suzuki is one of the five Suzuki children and has dedicated her life and work to science, conversation and communication. A British Columbia marine biologist with a PhD and MSc, Cullis-Suzuki has been named one of Canada’s Most Influential Millennials, nominated as Best Host at the World Congress of Science and Fact Producers, and has worked across various publications, film and audio platforms.

“Just being part of this legacy – on a personal level because of my dad, but also because I truly believe in the show and the substance – feels amazing,” Collis Suzuki said in a statement. “It’s such an honor. I feel so humbled.”

“I don’t think anyone could be David Suzuki, because he’s really that kind of unique, unique personality. So I think my challenge is to try to be myself and allow myself to genuinely follow my curiosity the way I always have.”

Suzuki announced his retirement after 43 seasons in late October. Its first episode aired on October 24, 1979, 19 years after the show’s debut. Previously, the series was co-hosted by Donald Ivey and Patterson Hume, with guest hosts including Lester Sinclair, Donald Crodis and John Livingston.

“I leave with gratitude for the opportunity to be a mentor in this world and with confidence that another generation with a younger perspective will continue to explore the important and exciting stories that ‘the nature of things’ has always brought Canadians,” Suzuki wrote, after the announcement.

Season 62 of The Nature of Things premieres Friday, January 6, 2023 on CBC
