The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships among telecommunications regulators within the West African sub-region as part of efforts to promote collaboration and regional integration.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, restated this commitment while hosting a high-level delegation from the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Represented by the Director of Corporate Planning, Strategy and Risk Management, Dr Kelechi Nwankwo, Maida emphasised the NCC’s mandate to collaborate with sister regulatory institutions to drive digital economy growth and improve citizens’ living standards.
He noted the Commission’s longstanding engagement through platforms such as the West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly (WATRA), stressing that the region becomes stronger and more prosperous when member countries are interconnected.
Maida also highlighted the NCC’s advocacy for the recognition of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as critical national infrastructure within ECOWAS, adding that Nigeria has already designated ICT as part of its critical national information infrastructure.
He assured the Liberian delegation of the NCC’s readiness to support regional initiatives and translate discussions into concrete outcomes.
In his remarks, Chairman of the LTA Board of Commissioners, Hon. Clarence Massaquoi, commended the NCC for fostering regional cooperation, noting that Nigeria’s progress in communications and economic development often has far-reaching impacts across West Africa.
Massaquoi disclosed that Liberia has signed bilateral agreements with The Gambia and Côte d’Ivoire and is in advanced talks with Ghana and Guinea-Conakry, while also seeking NCC’s support in regulatory capacity building and best practices as both regulators pledged deeper collaboration to advance seamless connectivity and regional integration.
