The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has suspended several officers in one of its Yobe State custodial centres over allegations of unprofessional conduct involving inmates.
The suspension, which takes immediate effect, will remain in force pending the conclusion of an ongoing investigation.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections, J. N. Osuji, who confirmed that the affected personnel had already been issued queries demanding explanations for their conduct.
According to Osuji, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the suspension after reviewing a preliminary report submitted to him.
The minister, while expressing displeasure over the development, reiterated that the Federal Government would not condone any act capable of undermining discipline within security and correctional institutions.
“He said the NCoS maintains strict zero-tolerance policy for all forms of misconduct, negligence, rights violations, or inappropriate relationships between staff and inmates,” the statement noted.
Tunji-Ojo added, “Any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary measures and possible legal sanctions in line with established regulations.”

He emphasised that correctional facilities nationwide would continue to operate strictly within the confines of the law and established ethical standards.
According to him, every officer is expected to uphold the highest level of integrity while carrying out their duties.
“Nwakuche assures the public of the Service’s unwavering commitment to professionalism, integrity, and the rule of law,” the statement added.
