THE Niger State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced considerable advancements in its battle against drug trafficking and abuse within the state.
In a statement from NDLEA’s Niger State Commandant, Shehu Godabawa, it was revealed that the agency made significant arrests and drug seizures during October 2024.
Throughout the month, the NDLEA in Niger State apprehended a total of 38 individuals involved in various drug-related crimes.
These arrests encompassed suspects linked to drug trafficking, illegal possession of drugs, and the distribution of illicit substances.
The total amount of drugs confiscated reached an impressive 226.845 kilograms, representing a significant achievement in the ongoing effort to combat drug proliferation in the area.
The command also reported that eleven of these suspects, identified as drug dealers, have been charged and brought before the court for illegal trafficking and possession of controlled substances. This legal action underscores the NDLEA’s determination to prosecute offenders and deter others from participating in drug-related activities.
In addition to enforcement measures, the NDLEA Niger State Command has actively engaged in raising public awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
During October, the agency organized 37 sensitization and education programs aimed at various communities, schools, and public events across the state.
These initiatives are designed to inform the public, particularly youth, about the health risks and social impacts of drug abuse, encouraging them to make informed choices.
Godabawa, in his statement, emphasized the NDLEA’s commitment to fostering a drug-free society and commended his team’s efforts.
He reiterated the agency’s focus on decreasing both the supply and demand for drugs in Niger State through a blend of enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation programs.
“The NDLEA Niger State Command is resolute in tackling drug trafficking and abuse through ongoing enforcement and community-focused awareness initiatives. We encourage community members to assist our efforts by reporting any suspicious drug-related activities,” Godabawa stated.
The actions taken by the NDLEA in October highlight the agency’s continual dedication to making Niger State a safer and healthier environment by disrupting the illegal drug trade and promoting awareness to prevent substance abuse.
