THE National Economic Council (NEC) yesterday unveiled the framework for the Renewed Hope Development Plan (2026–2030), marking a strategic push to consolidate Nigeria’s reform agenda and position the nation toward achieving a $1 trillion economy under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The announcement came during the 151st NEC meeting, where the council commended the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning for initiating the process.
NEC also called for active participation from all states and key stakeholders to ensure an inclusive approach that drives accelerated growth across the country.
A statement from Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), highlighted Vice President Kashim Shettima’s remarks that the new national development plan would build on existing policies, deepen continuity, and align Nigeria’s growth trajectory with the long-term vision of Nigeria Agenda 2050.
Describing the transition from the National Development Plan 2021–2025 to the Renewed Hope Plan as critical, Shettima said, “This is the bridge between lessons learned and ambitions pursued.
“The Renewed Hope Plan will consolidate ongoing reforms, deepen policy continuity, and align our medium-term strategies with the long-term horizon of Nigeria Agenda 2050. It’s a practical roadmap towards a $1 trillion economy by 2030.”
He emphasized that the plan would be participatory, not top-down, engaging multiple tiers of government, civil society, labour groups, private sector actors, and traditional institutions.
“This plan will not be drawn from the ivory towers of Abuja alone. The conversation begins here today and continues with state governments, local governments, organised private sector actors, civil society, youth, and traditional institutions,” Shettima stated.
In a bid to promote sustainable agriculture, the Vice President announced that NASENI has scaled up local production of solar-powered irrigation pumps to reduce energy costs for farmers, expand dry-season cultivation, and reinforce food security.
“This initiative is part of our commitment to reduce dependence on petrol-powered systems, lower farmers’ energy expenses, and strengthen national food security,” he added.
NEC also reaffirmed its role as a problem-solving platform, urging members to ensure that council deliberations translate into tangible outcomes for citizens.
“This council is not a stage for applause; it is a workshop for solutions. Let this 151st meeting be remembered for resolve and results that move from chamber to community,” Shettima said.
Additionally, the council called on the Accountant General of the Federation to expedite the release of funds for the next national polio immunization campaign, ensuring a smooth and hitch-free exercise.
NEC further encouraged partners to leverage technology to enhance surveillance and tracking within Nigeria’s routine immunization program.
The Renewed Hope Development Plan thus sets the stage for an inclusive, technologically driven, and policy-continuous approach aimed at transforming Nigeria’s economy over the next five years.
