The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved N100 billion for the rehabilitation of police and other security agencies’ training institutions across Nigeria.
The approval followed recommendations from an ad hoc committee established to assess the state of security training facilities nationwide.
During its 154th virtual meeting on Wednesday, NEC also endorsed N2.6 billion for consultancy services related to the rehabilitation project.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier proposed a comprehensive overhaul of security agencies’ training institutions at the 152nd NEC meeting in October.
Committee chairman and Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah, said the training facilities were in dire condition and required urgent intervention.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who chairs the council, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to revitalizing the facilities and urged governors to ensure that economic reforms translate into real improvements in citizens’ lives.
Shettima emphasized that governance must be judged by outcomes, not rhetoric.
“Our task is not to admire problems, but to solve them. Not to explain challenges, but to overcome them. And not to hope for progress, but to engineer it,” he said.
“Today’s agenda speaks to our shared responsibility to build a nation where reforms translate into results, and where policies are not mere promises but convincing instruments of change felt in the markets, schools, clinics and farms across our federation.”
The council also received updates from the Accountant-General of the Federation on key accounts, including the Excess Crude Account, Stabilization Account, and Natural Resources Development Account.
On polio eradication, the NEC ad hoc committee reported a 39 percent reduction in circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) cases in 2025 compared to 2024, with notable progress in Kano and Katsina.
NEC endorsed renewed vaccination campaigns targeting northern states and Oyo, emphasizing coordinated efforts to reach vulnerable communities.
Additionally, Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, briefed the council on domestic gas supply and the government’s plan to settle N185 billion in outstanding debts owed to gas producers to boost domestic gas production.
