New government plan to stop spilled sewage branded ‘joke’ and ‘license to pollute’

The Tory government’s new plan to tackle Britain’s sewage crisis with targets for water companies to make improvements by 2035 has been labeled a “cruel joke” and a “license to pollute”.

The Ministry of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) announced on Friday that water companies will need to invest £56 billion in capital investment over the next 25 years to tackle pollution.

The companies will also need to improve how they manage all sewage overflows that discharge next to bathing water by 2035 and improve 75 percent of overflows in top nature reserves by 2035.
