New Qi2 wireless charging standard is based on Apple’s MagSafe technology

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) plans to improve the wireless charging user experience and unify wireless charging under a single global standard with Qi2.

Slated to be introduced later this year, the new Qi2 standard is built on Apple’s MagSafe technology. The Qi2 Magnetic Power Profile will ensure phones and other rechargeable battery-powered mobile devices are perfectly aligned with charging devices, providing improved energy efficiency and faster charging.

The WPC says Qi2 will enable the development of faster wireless charging while ensuring the process remains safe. In addition, battery life will not be shortened, and the receiver will not be damaged. It also supports new product form factors such as an AR/VR headset which doesn’t require a flat surface-to-flat surface connection. New types of accessories, such as an extra battery pack, can be supported as well.

Qi2-certified mobile phones and chargers are expected to be available in the 2023 holiday season.
