Netflix is excited for the return of a giant! The streaming network has just released a new teaser of the upcoming miniseries Gamera -Rebirth-! The teaser in question has been uploaded to their Twitter, and can be viewed below.
It’s a short teaser, a slow pan up the mighty turtle’s body and cutting away just before his face is revealed. Then a cut to a shot of his back as he lumbers across a crumbling city towards his flying opponent. Then it cuts to a shot of his eye, then the title screen!
Gamera -Rebirth- will be a six-episode anime series following the iconic kaiju as he battles five different foes! But who will those foes be? Luckly, Netflix has also given a semi-reveal poster of the very foe in the teaser, Gyaos!
For those that are unfamiliar with Gamera, lets do a rundown of some of his iconic villians. Perhaps these will be the very foes that he’ll face in the new series! Let’s start with Gyaos, who is the Ghidorah to Gamera’s Godzilla!
First appearing in the third Gamera film, 1967’s Gamera vs. Gyaos, Gyaos is a flying dinosaur-like monster with a thirst for literal blood! Gyaos has appeared in six of the official Gamera feature films (if you count the stock footage used in 1980’s Gamera: Super Monster).
In 1969’s Gamera vs. Guiron, Gamera flew into space to save two children that were kidnapped by aliens called Terrans. Guiron was the guardian monster that he was forced to face. Guiron’s snout is blade shaped, and he knows how to use it! The blade was strong enough to cut into Gamera’s very own shell after a few strikes. While his design is arguably on the campy-side, there’s tons of room to give Guiron a rebirth of his own for a darker, gritter rematch.
What better to face off against a giant turtle than a giant fish? Zigra is from an alien planet where fish feed on humans. In the 1971 film, Gamera vs. Zigra, he came to earth in order to enslave the human race. Not on Gamera’s watch! Zigra would make a second appearance in 1980’s Gamera: Super Monster, but as stock footage from their previous battle.
In 1996, Gamera 2: Attack of Legion introduced the world to The Legion, a colony of aliens who used plants to colonize planets. The Legion resemble insects for the most part, and are lead by a great Mother Legion, who puts up quite the fight against Gamera. In order to win, Gamera was forced to call upon a particularly dangerous power, proving that the Legion was a force to be reckoned with.
1968 was another year for Gamera brawling with alien invaders. Gamera vs. Virus introduced us to the titular squid-like monster with both a large intellect and equally large powers. In the film, Virus kidnapped two boy scouts to lure Gamera into a place where they could install a mind control device onto him, then commanding him to rampage through Tokyo! If it weren’t for the meddling kids, Gamera could have been stuck for good.
And there we are, four potential baddies for the big guy to fight, and one confirmed! To be fair, it’s equally quite possible that one or two of these monsters could be original to the series, or a monster that isn’t on this list. Gamera is a monster with quite a few enemies after all!
