New terror group ‘Mahmuda’ escalates attacks in Kwara, Niger states

On Sunday night, the group attacked Ilesha Baruba and Kemaanji in Baruten and Kaiama LGAs of Kwara, killing four Fulani men, a vigilante, and a teenager. A similar attack occurred the same day in Kaiama.

Residents say the attackers, dressed in military camouflage, stormed a local market on motorcycles and opened fire.

The assault is believed to be a reprisal for community collaboration with security forces.

Mahmuda has reportedly operated for over five years, originating from Mokwa in Niger State and occupying parts of Kainji Lake National Park.

Though some reports link them to a breakaway Boko Haram faction, Kwara police deny their existence and reports of mass killings, stating there’s no verified evidence of such terrorist activity.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited Kaiama with top security officials, assuring residents of intensified efforts to restore peace.

Meanwhile, locals and experts criticize the country’s intelligence failures and call for a stronger, more coordinated counter-terrorism response.

The Emir of Yashikira and other residents confirmed Mahmuda’s long-standing presence and influence, especially among youths.

Despite recent military offensives, the group remains active.

Nigeria now faces threats from five major terrorist groups: Boko Haram, ISWAP, Ansaru, Lakurawa, and Mahmuda.

Experts urge the government to reclaim terrorist-held forests, improve intelligence coordination, and depoliticize security efforts.

Security analysts and former officials warn that without a united and strategic approach, the threat could spread further, as seen in other conflict-ridden states.
