The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has congratulated Captain Kelechi Ndukwe, a Nigerian-American officer, on his promotion to Commander of Destroyer Squadron 60 and Task Force 65 of the United States Navy, based in Rota, Spain.
The commission revealed this in a statement signed by Gabriel Odu from the Media, Public Relations and Protocols unit.
Naijaonpoint reports that the announcement came on September 26, 2025, in Abuja, with the Commission saying that Ndukwe will now oversee U.S. Navy destroyer operations across Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean.
His new role reflects years of service and leadership in international naval operations.
Ndukwe first made history in April 2021 when he became the first Nigerian-American to command a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG-97).
His journey from being the son of Nigerian immigrants to rising into the top ranks of the U.S. Navy has been described as a story of dedication, discipline, and excellence.
The Commission stated that his promotion is not only a personal milestone but also a source of pride for Nigeria, the global naval community, and Nigerians living abroad.
