THE Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) with the inauguration of the rehabilitated New Bussa waterworks in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Protesters in Abuja who officiated the project’s commissioning, stated that the Federal Government is dedicated to ensuring universal access to clean water and sanitation for all Nigerians.
The New Bussa waterworks, which had been inactive for over thirty years, has been revived to provide sustainable water management and enhance public health within the community.
This project holds special significance for the area, which is home to the Kainji Dam, the largest hydroelectric dam in Nigeria.
Initiated in 2023 as part of an intervention by the National Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), the waterworks had not delivered any water to households in the rapidly growing New Bussa community for over three decades.
During the event, George Akume, represented by Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sahabi Abdullahi, emphasized the project’s importance in preventing waterborne diseases and promoting public health in the area.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive of N-HYPPADEC, Abubakar Yelwa, assured the residents of New Bussa that the project’s commissioning marks just the beginning of the commission’s commitment to the community.
He noted that the water scheme represents a significant investment of over ₦2.1 billion, reflecting the Federal Government’s dedication to the welfare of the people of New Bussa.
Expressing his joy, the Emir of Bargu, Sani Haliru-Dantoro, stated that the restoration of the waterworks serves as compensation for the sacrifices and support the community has provided to Nigeria’s electricity supply.
