A police officer attached to the 12 Police Mobile Force unit in Minna, Niger State, has died after shooting himself during a routine arms audit.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on December 16, 2025.
The officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Abdullahi Isah, had been arrested a day earlier over alleged involvement in illegal ammunition dealings and was escorted to his office as part of ongoing audit and investigative procedures.
Police authorities said that while the arms audit was underway, DSP Isah picked up a pistol in the office and shot himself in the head.
Following the incident, officers assigned to escort and monitor him during the audit were arrested for alleged negligence, for failing to prevent the act.
The police confirmed that investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
