THE Niger State Police Command has confirmed that a woman identified as Ammaye was killed by a mob in Mariga Local Government Area over alleged blasphemous remarks.
According to the police spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, the incident happened on Saturday at about 2:00 pm in Kasuwan Garba.
Ammaye, a food vendor, was accused of making statements deemed offensive to Islam during a quarrel with a relative.
Eyewitnesses said the matter was first taken to the District Head of the community, who handed the woman to security operatives for investigation.
However, an angry crowd of youths overpowered the security team, stoned her to death, and set her body ablaze before police reinforcements could arrive.
Abiodun described the killing as a criminal act of jungle justice and assured that investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute those involved.
He appealed to residents to remain calm and allow security agencies to handle such sensitive cases in accordance with the law.
