AS Nigeria marks its 65th independence anniversary, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on citizens to embrace sacrifice, patriotism, and faith in God as tools to overcome the country’s challenges.
In a statement issued today, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, congratulated Nigerians for their resilience over the decades, urging both leaders and citizens to rise above ethnic, religious, and political differences for the common good.
“As a faith community, CAN believes that the challenges we face can be overcome with collective sacrifice, patriotism, and trust in God. We call on all Nigerians, leaders and citizens alike, to work together for the good of our nation,” the statement read.
The association, however, expressed concern over Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, urging the Federal Government to intensify efforts in tackling terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and communal clashes.
Okoh emphasized the need for sustained collaboration between security agencies, local communities, and faith-based organizations to secure lasting peace.
Reflecting on the nation’s journey, the CAN leader highlighted how Nigerians have endured civil war, political instability, and recurring economic crises, yet have continued to display remarkable courage and hope.
He pointed to progress in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and telecommunications since independence, stressing that generations of young Nigerians are shaping the country’s future.
On the economic front, Archbishop Okoh acknowledged the necessity of President Bola Tinubu’s reforms but admitted they have brought “temporary hardship” for millions.
“True progress must be measured not only by statistics but by the food on every table, the security of every community, and the opportunities available to every child,” he said
While applauding reforms, he urged leaders to remain focused, prayerfully asking God to grant them wisdom and protect them from sycophants “who do not mean well for our nation.”
As Nigeria steps into another year of independence, CAN’s message struck a balance between commendation and caution: celebrating the country’s resilience while reminding its leaders of the urgent work ahead to deliver peace, stability, and prosperity for all.
