The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has dismissed as false and misleading a report alleging a jailbreak at the Benin Custodial Centre, describing the publication as unfounded and capable of causing public panic.
The Service was reacting to an online report published by a national daily (Not Blueprint) titled: “Jail Break in Benin Prison.”
In a statement issued on Monday by the Service Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Correction, Jane Osuji, the NCoS categorically stated that there was no jailbreak, escape, or security breach in any custodial facility in Benin City or anywhere in Edo state.
According to the statement, comprehensive checks and verifications carried out by the Edo state Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed that all inmates were fully accounted for and that custodial operations across the state remained secure and under effective control.
The Service expressed concern that the media organisation involved failed to seek clarification or verification from either the State Command or the National Headquarters of the NCoS before publishing the report, noting that such action violated the principles of professional and responsible journalism.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to assure the general public, especially residents of Benin City and Edo State, that all custodial facilities in the State are secure and there is no threat whatsoever to public safety,” the statement said.
The NCoS reaffirmed its commitment to its statutory responsibilities of safe custody, security, and rehabilitation of inmates in line with international best practices.
