The Nigeria Police Force has recorded another major success in its fight against cybercrime with the conviction of 59 foreign nationals involved in a large-scale internet fraud syndicate uncovered in Abuja.
Nigeria Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the convictions in a statement issued on October 16, 2025, from the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The convictions, secured through the National Cybercrime Centre, add to earlier court rulings that brought the total number of convicted suspects to 85.
The syndicate was first exposed in November 2024 when police operatives carried out a coordinated raid on a building in the Jahi area of Abuja.
During the operation, which was based on credible intelligence, 130 suspects were arrested, including 113 foreign nationals from China and Malaysia and 17 Nigerians.
Investigations revealed that the group was engaged in various forms of cybercrime, including large-scale internet scams and sophisticated hacking operations that posed serious risks to Nigeria’s national security.
Twenty-one members of the group were convicted in August 2025, while five others were sentenced the following month. With the latest convictions, police say the prosecution of the remaining suspects is ongoing.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended the efforts of the cybercrime unit and stressed that the outcome sends a clear warning to cybercriminals within and outside Nigeria.
“These convictions send a clear message to both local and international cybercriminal networks that Nigeria will not serve as a safe haven for cybercriminal enterprises,” Egbetokun said.
He assured Nigerians that the Force will continue to deploy advanced technology, enhance international cooperation, and pursue thorough investigations to dismantle organised cybercrime networks and bring offenders to justice.
