The Nigerian Army has officially reacted to the tragic death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, who was allegedly set ablaze by his newlywed wife during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, in Akwa Ibom State.
According to reports, the shocking incident occurred after a heated argument between the couple turned violent. The officer’s wife, identified as Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Dalong Samson Haruna, allegedly set fire to their home, trapping her husband inside. Lieutenant Haruna sustained severe burns before being rescued by neighbours and fellow soldiers who rushed to the scene.
He was first treated at the Battalion Medical Facility before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) for intensive care. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Tuesday, September 23, 2025, despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life.
Army Confirms Investigation
Following the incident, the 2 Brigade Headquarters of the Nigerian Army, located in Uyo, confirmed that a full-scale investigation has been launched by military police to determine the exact circumstances leading to the officer’s death.
The Army described the act as deeply disturbing, emphasising that domestic violence of any kind is unacceptable within the military community. Senior officers have since visited the family of the deceased to offer condolences and assess the scene of the incident.
The Army also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peaceful family relations among personnel and addressing domestic challenges that could lead to violence or emotional instability. It added that appropriate disciplinary measures will follow once investigations are concluded.

The death of Lieutenant Haruna has sparked widespread grief and outrage on social media, with many Nigerians calling for greater awareness and intervention to prevent cases of domestic violence among military families.
Observers have also urged the Nigerian Army to strengthen its psychological and marital counselling programs, citing increasing reports of domestic disputes turning fatal within military formations.

The latest tragedy comes amid renewed public attention to violent incidents involving soldiers and civilians in Akwa Ibom State.
In a separate case, one Christopher Enobong Jimmy, a 42-year-old clearing and forwarding company manager from Onne Ports, Rivers State, was reportedly shot dead by a soldier after offering him a lift along the East-West Road from Port Harcourt.
The soldier, whom Jimmy had attempted to assist by giving a ride to Ette Junction in Ikot Abasi, allegedly turned violent, resulting in Jimmy’s death. The case, which occurred on May 23, 2021, drew nationwide condemnation and renewed calls for stricter disciplinary actions and mental health evaluations among military personnel.

Lieutenant Haruna’s death has left his family, friends, and colleagues in deep mourning. His colleagues at the barracks described him as a dedicated officer known for discipline, calmness, and professionalism.
