Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, is facing criticism from Nigerians after presenting brand new Land Cruiser SUVs to all former deputy governors of the state.
The governor announced the gesture on Thursday night via his official X page, sharing photos of the vehicles and their recipients.
He wrote, “I presented brand new Land Cruisers to all former Deputy Governors of Akwa Ibom State as a token of appreciation for their years of service and sacrifice.
“Their dedication has helped shape our State’s progress, and it’s only fitting they enjoy comfort as they continue to share their wisdom with us. Thank you for your service!”
While Eno described the gesture as a token of appreciation, it quickly sparked mixed reactions online.
Some Nigerians have reacted: @Alabi Lawrence stated that, “Genuine question: does this improve the lives of the common man/woman in your state?”
@The Real Pee said, “They already had cars and project allocations during their tenure. They likely receive pensions. Yet, new cars are given while unemployment and industrial development remain neglected. This governance focuses only on the political class.”
Grok Mr: “I’m grossly disappointed. Recover these vehicles and apologise to your citizens. The state is filled with vulnerable poor. This money should have been used to build small-scale food industries and employ the poor.”
Another user @Mylesmonrel said, “This is not a good gesture. Why not invest in pensions, schools, roads, hospitals, or other projects to better citizens’ lives? This appears to be an attempt to secure political support for your next term.”
Dee, “The same people who contributed little during their tenure are rewarded with taxpayer money. How many civil servants have been honoured in comparison?”
Yemtech, “I strongly condemn this lavish gift. It raises serious questions about state resources. Was this expenditure budgeted?”
