David Okereke is aiming to inspire Gaziantep FK to an upset victory over high-flying Fenerbahçe when the two sides clash in a Turkish Super Lig encounter on Monday evening, Soccernet.ng reports.

Fenerbahçe, managed by veteran coach José Mourinho, have been in blistering form this season, suffering only one league defeat in 2024 — a 3-1 loss to reigning champions Galatasaray in September.

The Istanbul giants currently sit second in the league standings, five points adrift of Galatasaray.

Monday’s showdown at the Ülker Stadyumu Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Spor Kompleksi in Istanbul sees the hosts chasing their 10th league win of the campaign.

History strongly favours Fenerbahçe, who have won their last six meetings with Gaziantep FK and remain unbeaten at home against them in the Super Lig. Mourinho will be determined to preserve that record.

However, Gaziantep’s Nigerian forward, David Okereke, could pose a significant threat.

The former Nigeria youth international is no stranger to Mourinho, having faced the Portuguese tactician six times during his stints with Venezia and Cremonese in Serie A.

Remarkably, Okereke boasts three wins, a draw, and only two defeats in these encounters, contributing two goals and an assist.

Okereke arrives in Istanbul in fine form, with two goals and an assist in his last three outings for Gaziantep FK.

The striker played a pivotal role in last week’s win against Başakşehir, scoring after returning from an injury sustained earlier in the season.

Ahead of the match, Okereke expressed confidence in his ability to help his team secure a positive result.

“The atmosphere in these types of matches is unique,” he said. “If the coach gives me the opportunity, I will do my best for the team.”

Preparations at Gaziantep FK are in full swing, with morale high in the camp. Head coach Selçuk İnan emphasised the importance of tactical discipline during recent training sessions, urging his players to remain focused and determined.

The squad is scheduled to travel to Istanbul on Sunday after completing their final preparations.
