Those who’ve followed the series from the start will remember that World’s Finest #12 saw Kara and Dick go on a disastrous first date, proving they were completely incompatible and setting the tone of mutual dislike for their future interactions. Now, in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #44 by Mark Waid, Mark Russell, and Dan Mora, Robin and Supergirl are forced to team up once again.
During this uneasy partnership, the two are captured by Lex Luthor’s cronies and tied up together. After plenty of bickering and sharp remarks, they manage an exceptionally daring escape. When they trigger the building’s self-destruct and barely make it out, adrenaline and emotion run high, pushing their usual tension to new, unexpected territory.
Adding to the charged atmosphere, Kara carries Dick bridal-style as they soar from the explosion. Caught in close proximity, with adrenaline pumping, a rare compliment from Dick, and a surge of chemistry between them, the two share a spontaneous kiss midair. A perfect example of just how thin the line between love and hate can be.

What makes this shared kiss between Kara and Dick so shocking for those who have been following Batman/Superman: World’s Finest is that dozens of issues have passed since their disastrous date, with their mutual dislike never wavering. It was a total surprise to see Waid revisit their relationship, and even more surprising to see the two actually kiss.
However, after this adrenaline-fueled kiss, the two hilariously fall right back into their usual bickering, even getting tangled up in Robin’s car mid-argument. When Batman stumbles upon the scene, the Dark Knight looks far from convinced as Dick and Kara simultaneously insist they’re not dating. It remains to be seen whether Waid will build on their dynamic or if this was simply a fun one-off moment. Either way, this issue was a fun and refreshing departure from the dominating Nightwing x Batgirl narratives.
