The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has predicted a series of thunderstorms and rainfall activities across different parts of the country from Monday, July 8, to Wednesday, July 10, 2025.
In its three-day weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, the agency warned Nigerians to brace up for strong winds, potential flash floods, and lightning hazards in areas expected to experience thunderstorms.
According to the forecast, Monday will begin with patches of cloud and isolated morning thunderstorms in parts of Taraba and Adamawa states.
Later in the afternoon and evening hours, thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall are expected in parts of Zamfara, Adamawa, Kebbi, Taraba, and Kaduna.
On Tuesday, sunny skies with patches of clouds are forecast across the northern region in the morning, while isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected later in the day in Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, and Adamawa.
By Wednesday morning, early thunderstorms with rain are anticipated in Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, and Gombe. This is expected to extend into Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, and Zamfara by evening.
In the North-Central zone, including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Benue, Kogi, Plateau, Kwara, and Nasarawa, NiMet projected sunny and partly cloudy skies in the mornings for Monday and Tuesday.
However, there are high prospects of isolated thunderstorms and rain showers in the afternoon and evening hours throughout the forecast period.
On Wednesday, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, followed by scattered thunderstorms across the region later in the day.
For residents in the southern region, NiMet forecast cloudy skies and morning rainfall over coastal cities such as Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa on Monday.
In the later hours, rain showers are expected to spread inland, affecting Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Imo, Abia, Edo, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Lagos.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the pattern continues, with morning rain showers predicted over parts of Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom, followed by more widespread rain activity in the afternoon and evening hours.
NiMet cautioned Nigerians to be alert and adopt safety measures, especially in areas where thunderstorms are predicted.
“Strong winds may precede the rains. People are advised to secure loose objects and avoid taking shelter under trees to prevent injury from falling branches,” the agency said.
The weather body also warned against driving during heavy downpours and urged the public to unplug electrical appliances to avoid damage from lightning or power surges.
The agency advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for safe flight planning and operations.
The agency added, “Residents are also encouraged to follow weather updates via NiMet’s official channels, including the website www.nimet.gov.ng.”
