The management of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and its affiliated unions have resolved their welfare-related issues, preventing a planned strike.
The Forum Secretary of the Joint Aviation Trade Unions Forum, Nnadi Hector, said that the management of NiMet and its affiliated unions are actively working to resolve existing challenges.
Speaking further on the matter, Hector clarified that while he is not directly part of NiMet’s system, the agency remains affiliated with the aviation trade unions.
“I’m not part of the NiMet system, but we are still affiliated with them. NiMet and their management are resolving the challenge now,” he stated.
He further disclosed that discussions have taken place at high levels, including a meeting in Lagos between the Minister of Aviation and all aviation unions, where the NiMet issue was addressed.
“The Minister had a meeting with all the aviation unions in Lagos and the NiMet issue was also discussed there. And the DG of NiMet was there also. So, everything is in progress,” Hector explained.
Addressing the ultimatum issued by NiMet unions, he emphasised that there is an ongoing understanding between the management and the unions to resolve the matter collaboratively.
“Whether the unions, that is the NiMet unions, because NiMet unions, they were the ones that gave that ultimatum. But what I know is that there is that understanding that there is work in progress,” he said.
According to him, both NiMet’s management and the unions are working together to put the issue behind them.
“Management of NiMet is working, and also the unions are working along to ensure that these things are put behind,” Hector affirmed.
Confirming the development, NiMet spokesperson, Muntari Yusuf, stated that the situation had been addressed, and the planned industrial action did not take place.
“It has passed and the strike didn’t happen which means we have resolved the matter,” Yusuf said.
