NISO links national grid disturbance to Gombe Substation

THE Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has attributed yesterday’s national grid disturbance to a voltage fluctuation at the Gombe transmission substation.

In a statement released yesterday, the system operator clarified that the incident did not result in a total collapse of the national grid, contrary to reports by some media outlets.

According to NISO, the event was a partial system disturbance and the second recorded grid incident in 2026.

NISO confirmed that electricity supply across all affected areas has since been fully restored following swift corrective actions by its technical teams.

The operator explained that the disturbance originated at the Gombe transmission substation before spreading to other parts of the transmission network.

“The national grid has been fully restored, and power supply has returned to normal in all affected areas,” the statement read.

“The incident only affected a portion of the grid and therefore did not constitute a total system collapse.”

The voltage disturbance reportedly led to the tripping of several transmission lines and generating units, resulting in a partial system shutdown.

Restoration efforts commenced immediately after the incident and were completed within a few hours.

NISO further disclosed that the disturbance quickly propagated to other substations, including Jebba, Kainji, and Ayede, before stabilisation measures were successfully implemented.

Although the system was promptly stabilised, some transmission lines and generation units were affected during the process.

Nigeria’s power grid has continued to experience recurrent disturbances in recent years.

In 2025 alone, the grid collapsed several times, with the last incident recorded on December 29.

Yesterday’s disruption marked the second grid disturbance of 2026 and was classified as a partial system collapse, after power generation dropped to zero megawatts at approximately 11:00 a.m.
