The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to open governance, transparency and inclusive digital development as the Open Government Partnership (OGP) team presented awards and certificates won by the country at the OGP Global Summit Spain 2025.
Nigeria emerged as the overall global winner in the Digital Governance category for deploying digital tools and policies that enhance transparency, accountability and citizen engagement. It also received the Regional Award for advancing Open Digital Governance across Africa and the Middle East, underscoring its leadership in the region.
The recognition was largely attributed to initiatives led by NITDA in collaboration with civil society organisations, including Dataphyte, which showcased innovative and inclusive digital governance practices at the summit.
The OGP Global Summit, held in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, attracted over 1,500 representatives of governments, civil society organisations and policymakers from around the world to review progress and share best practices on open government reforms.
Receiving the OGP delegation, Inuwa described the honours as a national achievement that reflects collective efforts across government, civil society and the private sector. He cautioned that the recognition carries responsibility, warning that failure to deliver on commitments could affect Nigeria’s local and international standing.
He linked the achievement to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, highlighting digital transformation, transparency, economic diversification, job creation and efficient public service delivery as core priorities aligned with open digital governance.
Inuwa emphasised the importance of collaboration, describing the OGP platform as a catalyst for multi-stakeholder engagement. He disclosed that NITDA has begun reviewing its OGP commitments and is working with stakeholders to develop clear implementation strategies and joint work streams.
Earlier, the leader of the OGP delegation, Mr. Olusoji Apampa, said the awards resulted from strong government–civil society collaboration, with NITDA playing a key role in advancing digital governance reforms, expressing optimism that the recognition would accelerate implementation across Nigeria.
