The Federal High Court in Abuja has delayed ruling on an application filed by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), seeking transfer to the National Hospital for medical treatment.

At Friday’s hearing, Justice James Omotosho stood down the case after hearing arguments from both the defence and prosecution.

Kanu’s lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), presented a medical report from Prof. Austin Agaji, urging the court to order his transfer for further treatment.

The prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), opposed the request, stating that the Department of State Services (DSS) had complied with earlier court orders granting Kanu access to relatives, doctors of his choice, and his lawyers.

He added that the DSS had also permitted him to visit facilities of his preference.

Awomolo further disclosed that the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has constituted a seven-member team of experts to independently assess Kanu’s health status following conflicting claims.

He urged the court to allow time for the panel to submit its report within a week.

The DSS lawyer argued that moving Kanu to the National Hospital could raise security concerns, describing claims of his deteriorating health as exaggerated.

However, Kanu’s counsel maintained that his client’s condition required urgent attention.

Justice Omotosho reserved his decision, saying that he would deliver a ruling after considering the submissions and the new development involving the NMA panel.
